Who we are

Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Limited (SQC) is at the forefront of global efforts to build a commercial-scale quantum computer and bring quantum computing to market.Established in May 2017, it is the world’s first atomic precision manufacturing company focused on delivering the highest quality qubits and commercial outcomes as they scale. SQC has significant backing from Telstra, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, UNSW Sydney, and the Australian Federal and New South Wales governments. With AU$283m in funding to date and a highly integrated team of engineers, SQC has developed a full-stack quantum computer in-house and is capable of rapid iteration and product deployment at speed.

Position Summary

This position will be in one of Australia’s leading research teams conducting world-leading research in atomic electronics and quantum computing with the specific aim of building a quantum computer based on atom-qubits in silicon. Silicon Quantum Computing is an Australian research and development company, working hard to make quantum computers a reality.

We are looking for a motivated and capable FPGA Design Engineer with hands-on experience in Xilinx RFSoC platforms to join our multidisciplinary hardware team. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys exploring new design concepts, has a solid grasp of both analogue and digital design fundamentals, and thrives in a highly integrated RF/digital/embedded development environment.

You will contribute to the development and integration of complex systems leveraging the unique capabilities of RFSoC technology, working at the intersection of high-speed data converters, signal processing, and logic design.

This position reports to the Hardware/Embedded System Engineering Lead. While this role does not have any direct reports, it is expected that they will assist where necessary with mentoring/supervision support of other team members and contributeto the growth of a high-performance Hardware/Embedded System Engineering Team.

Key responsibilities

    • Develop, implement, and test FPGA-based designs targeting Xilinx RFSoC devices, including the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC family.
    • Collaborate on system-level architecture and partitioning between programmable logic (PL), processing system (PS), and RF/data converter subsystems.
    • Integrate analogue signal chains (e.g., ADCs, DACs) with digital logic in high-bandwidth and low-latency systems.
    • Design and implement DSP pipelines, AXI-based interfaces, and control logic in Verilog (or VHDL).
    • Work with high-speed I/O, clocks, resets, and synchronization circuits.
    • Utilize Vivado and Vitis for design, simulation, synthesis, and system integration.
    • Conduct timing closure, resource optimization, and verification using simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
    • Support hardware bring-up, signal integrity analysis, and debugging with test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
    • Explore and prototype new design ideas, contributing to architecture discussions and innovation.
    • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
    • An undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent and 3-6 years of FPGA development experience.
    • Strong experience with Xilinx RFSoC platforms, particularly UltraScale+ Zynq-based devices.
    • Proficiency in VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog for RTL design.
    • Experience with Vivado Design Suite, including IP integrator, block design flow, and constraint management.
    • Understanding of analogue signal behaviour, sampling theory, and mixed-signal system integration.
    • Familiarity with digital signal processing, including filtering, decimation/interpolation, FFTs, or modulation.
    • Practical knowledge of CPU microarchitecture design, including ALUs, pipelines, and memory interfaces. Experience in FPGA soft-core CPU implementation is a strong plus.
    • Competence in AXI4, DMA engines, and integrating with embedded software running on ARM processors.
    • Contribute interfaces to a Python driver layer for a broader software stack. Write robust unit tests for use in automated build systems and CI/CD flows.
    • Familiarity with software languages like Rust or C.
    • Willingness and curiosity to engage with novel architectures, explore trade-offs, and participate in iterative prototyping.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, especially HDL Coder or Model-Based Design flows.
  • Familiarity with RF concepts such as SFDR, ENOB, gain/phase balance, or clocking and synchronization.
  • Hands-on lab experience with test and measurement equipment.
  • Knowledge of Linux-based embedded systems and software drivers for FPGA-controlled peripherals.
